Period poverty among Pasifika youth – Dr Jemaima Tiatia-Seath on One News

Period poverty is in the headlines again, this time with a focus on our Pasifika communities. Dr Jemaima Tiatia-Seath of the Adolescent Health Research Group (the broader group behind Youth19) shared Youth19 findings with Tagata Pasifika and One News.

Our data show that Māori and Pacific students are disproportionately affected by period poverty. Of those who have had their first period, 15% of Māori & 14% of Pacific students (compared with 5% of European students) have missed school due to a lack of menstrual items.
